The Big Latch On 2017

The Big Latch On 2017 takes place at registered locations around the world during World Breastfeeding Week. It is a place for breastfeeding women to gather with family and friends in their community that promote and support breastfeeding. This year I am working with Genesis Birth Company to host The Big Latch On in Lehi, Utah.
The event this year will take place at Olympic Park in Lehi, Utah on Saturday, August 5th from 9am to Noon. We will have community vendors, games for the kids and some awesome giveaways. At 10:30am is when "The Big Latch" takes place and those that breastfeed will latch on their little ones. In 2016, 17,992 children latched on at 758 locations across 28 countries.

Check out the Facebook Event Page for event updates and giveaway sneak peeks!

Keeping It Cool During Your Summer Pregnancy

My oldest child was born in December and my youngest in August. I was not prepared at all for a (surprise) summer pregnancy! But found some ways to help my survive:

Get a Pool Pass or Baby Pool (or BOTH!)
I spent most of my days at the pool with my 2 year old. I rocked my bikini despite the crazy stares I got and the "you're brave" comments. If we weren't at our community pool I was probably outside in the backyard with the sprinkler or kiddie pool filled to the brim.

Hydrate
Being hydrated is no new thing, especially when you're pregnant, but it's so important in the summer. I had my water bottle and back up water bottle filled with ice water everywhere I went.

Find a Good Deodorant
This is always important whether you're pregnant or not. I highly recommend Primal Pit Paste, it's the only natural deodorant that ever worked for me.

Get Out Early
My 2 year old was wanting to be outside always but it was so hot and we don't have a ton of shade in our yard during certain hours. We'd get up early (well my daughter woke up at 6 am anyways) and hit the parks. It was perfect because they weren't overly busy and the weather was PERFECT!

Buy All the Dresses
Wearing shorts that stuck to my legs made me 10000 times hotter so I only wore skirts and dresses (except when I was in my bathing suit). Hit up your local Target--you won't regret it.

What has helped you stay cool during your summer pregnancy?

Bring on 2018!

Are you expecting a baby is 2018? A doula is a must! I would love to meet with you and talk about your birth plans.

Belly Dancing For Pregnancy And Birth

During my second pregnancy I took a Dancing For Birth  class and LOVED it! I'm not a dancer but belly dancing really helped me to be more in tune with my body and taught me different ways to move that were very beneficial during my birth.

On Tuesday, May 16th from 7:00-9:00pm my Dancing For Birth instructor, Bethany, will be attending our local Meet Utah Midwives and Doulas event in Provo, Utah. Some of the best out of hospital midwives and doulas will be in attendance and Bethany will be teaching us about movement in pregnancy and birth.

If you're wanting to find your perfect midwife or doula, or if you're expecting and wanting to learn more about ways to move for optimal positioning of baby please come!

Date: Tuesday, May 16th
Time: 7-9 PM
Location: North Park, Provo, UT (500 N 500 W, Provo)

Meditation and Mindfulness in Birth

This year I've been honored to be the Utah County Representative on the Utah Doula Association Board. I've met so many amazing professionals and have loved mentoring new local doulas. Yesterday was the annual UDA Conference and I was able to spend the day with many amazing doulas, learning and enjoying yummy food.

One of the presenters, Elizabeth Smith, a Master of Public Health, spoke about meditation and mindfulness in birth. Personally for me and my doula practice I think these skills are so important when preparing for and experiencing birth.

She spoke about how mindfulness brings about moment to moment awareness and in birth this is SO powerful! Contractions come and go; you need to focus during each contraction and then enjoy the break. If you're constantly anticipating the next contraction or wave then you cannot enjoy the rest between which is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. When women are no longer able to enjoy and appreciate the rest, that is when they often begin to panic and feel fear. Being present and mindful during birth can help you experience a birth without fear because fear only comes from the future and regret from the past; in the present there is neither.

The opposite of fear is safety and a positive birth can happen when you feel safe, heard, and like you have choices. My goal as a doula is to help women and their families feel safe, heard and to be aware of their choices. I'm excited to move forward and incorporate more mindfulness and meditation in my doula practice with my clients.

What are some ways you used mindfulness and meditation in your pregnancy, birth and parenting?
